Welcome to Year 5/6!

Our PE days are Monday and Friday each week. Please come to school wearing PE kit on those days.

Reading books and records should be in school each day. Please read at home 5 times each week and record this in your reading record. This will be checked each Friday.

This half term in English, we will be focusing on poetry to begin with. We will study the narrative poem The Highwayman and the features it includes before writing our own poem. Afterwards, we will look at a range of Greek myths and common elements they share.

In maths, we will working on fractions. We will become confident working with equivalent fractions; converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions; and using the four operations with fractions.

For the first two weeks, we will have blocked art lessons in the afternoons which will help us to improve mastery of art and design techniques, including printing and sculpture. We will discuss the artist Brancusi and the designer Richard Sweeney.

For the middle two weeks, we will have blocked science lessons which will explore materials. We will find out which materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution; decide how mixtures and solutions might be separated; explain that some changes form new materials; and explore reversible and irreversible changes.

For the final two weeks of the half term, we will have blocked geography lessons. We will find information in an atlas using the index and simple co-ordinates; use a key to describe features on an Ordnance Survey map; and use the eight compass points to describe routes on a map.

In RE, we will learn about how the Old Testament pieces together the people of God. We will explore how the story of Moses and the Exodus shows how God rescued his people from slavery in Egypt.

In music, we will listen to and identify the structure of songs; listen to and analyse song lyrics; understand techniques for creating a song; improvise and experiment with pitch and rhythm to create a strong hook; and compose and create fragments of songs.

In PE, we will be looking at dance and invasion games.

Our computing work will focus on designing and creating 3D models using graphical modelling software.

In Spanish, we will learn the days of the week; the months of the year; the four seasons; and the date.

In our PSHE work, we will be thinking about the importance of protecting the environment and how everyday actions can either support or damage it.
